Joniškis is a town in northern Lithuania with a population of about 12,400. It is located 40 kilometers north of Šiauliai and 14 kilometers south of the Lithuanian Latvian border. Joniškis is also the municipal and administrative center of Joniškis Region, known for the fertility of its soil and for the extensive agricultural development. There are seven educational institutions in Joniškis: ''Joniškis Secondary School No. 2, Matas Slančiauskas Gymnasium, Aušra Gymnasium, Joniškis Youth School, Joniškis Agricultural School, Sports School'', and ''Art School''.
