John Goffe was born on March 25 , 1701 in Boston, Massachusetts . As a young man John Goffe was a hunter and trapper in the woods of New Hampshire . Goffe married Hannah Griggs of Roxbury, Massachusetts on October 16 , 1722 . They had eight daughters and one son (Maj. John Goffe, Jr.). Service in the Colonial wars On April 16 , 1725 John Goffe was with Captain John Lovewell on his third and final expedition against the Abenaki during Dummer's War . He was left with a small garrison at a fort built at Ossipee before the climactic fight. In 1734 he and his family moved to Derryfield, New Hampshire, now called Goffstown after him. During King George's War Goffe was a captain of scouts, or snowshoe men, and led a company protecting the frontier of New Hampshire from Indian attack. With the start of the French And Indian War Goffe was once again in the New Hampshire Militia serving in Joseph Blanchard 's Regiment of 1755 . He saw action at the Battle Of Lake George , Battle Of Fort William Henry , Battle Of Carillon , Battle Of Ticonderoga and the Battle Of Montreal , rising to the rank of Colonel and commanding the New Hampshire Provincial Regiment . His regiment helped to build the Crown Point Military Road from Fort At Number 4 to Fort Crown Point in 1759 . After the war Col. Goffe commanded the 9th New Hampshire Militia Regiment . American Revolution Though too old now at the age of 74 to take command of troops in the field, John Goffe was an avid revolutionary during the American Revolutionary War . Goffe served in the provincial legislature, and he was the first judge of probate for Hillsborough County, New Hampshire . Goffe lived to see the creation of the new United States and died at the age of 85 on October 20 , 1786 . He is buried at the old graveyard in Bedford, New Hampshire . |
