Sir John has several high-profile positions, including chairman of the British Museum and served as a Non-executive Director for British Nuclear Fuels Plc (BNFL) between 1997 and 2000. He is also the Chairman of Trustees of the Cambridge Union Society JAPAN CONNECTION Sir John retains a strong interest in Japan, and wrote the introduction to '' Japanese Students at Cambridge University in the Meiji Era, 1868-1912: Pioneers for the Modernization of Japan'' by Noboru Koyama, translated by Ian Ruxton, ([http://www.lulu.com/content/71869 Lulu Press , September 2004, ISBN 1411612566).
