Jesse Metcalfe (born December 9 , 1978 ) is an American Actor . Jesse Eden Metcalfe was born in Carmel Valley , California to to Scott Metcalfe and Nancy DeMaio; he has Italian , French and Portuguese ancestry. Metcalfe graduated from New York University 's Tisch School Of The Arts . He is best known to fans for his role as Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on the NBC Soap Opera '' Passions '' from the show's debut in July 1999 until July 2004 . In late 2003 and early 2004 , Metcalfe made two guest appearances on the WB Network TV series '' Smallville '' as vindictive "meteor freak hunter" Van McNulty. Metcalfe returned to television as the sexy teenage gardener John Rowland on the popular ABC TV drama '' Desperate Housewives '' where his character John is having a secret relationship with housewife Gabrielle Solis played by Eva Longoria , since the series' debut in October 2004 . Metcalfe has only made a few appearances on the second season of "Desperate Housewives" as he has been filming his first major motion picture, "John Tucker Must Die." Metcalfe is the third star to appear on '' Punk'd '' more than twice, after Wilmer Valderrama , Omarion and Jesse McCartney . His first appearance was when Metcalfe and Ashton Kutcher '' Punk'd '' Eva Longoria for stealing thousands of dollars and fraud (false identity). His second is when Metcalfe was '' Punk'd '' by Kutcher 's crew members during the '' Spider-Man 3 '' audition. In October 2005 , rumors started to circulate that Metcalfe wanted to exit ''Desperate Housewives'' in order to return to ''Passions'' as Miguel. {Link without Title} However, Metcalfe had made it clear that he is "looking forward," and fans should not hold out hope for his return to the NBC soap. In March 2006 , while in Australia Jesse met Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle . They spent a date together, and friends say they are planning another.
