jESSE is Open-source Software whose goal is to simulate the financial market. It allows a number of people, called "players", to trade on a virtual market place, similar to Euronext, NYSE. The players are allowed to sell and purchase various types of financial assets, such as Equities , Bonds , Currencies , Commodities , etc. Presently, several types of orders can be passed on this platform, for instance limit orders or market orders. It is a simulation software for researchers in experimental finance. It can be downloaded freely {Link without Title} .

FEATURE SUMMARY

Different types of orders can be implemented. The researcher managing the simulation will also be able to send messages to the players, and/or manipulating asymmetric signals. That means the researcher will be able to send messages to some players only, giving them more information about the market. jESSE includes analysis tools, such as graphs. During and after the simulations, jESSE can also export the data provided by the experiments, so that it will be easily processed in a spreadsheet (like Gnumeric, or Microsoft Excel). Researchers can easily conduct a quantitative or qualitative research (graphs) by using these powerful tools.

THE DEVELOPERS TEAM

12 people are currently working on jESSE. Two groups of 6 students from Ecole Centrale De Lille . The first team (AKA EcoXP) initiated the project in September 2003 and has stopped working on it in May 2005. The other team (AKA TRADING) began in September, 2004 and will contribute to jESSE till June, 2006. But the goal of this project is to involve as many people as possible, since it is open-source. The project is directed by 2 french professors, Olivier Brandouy Rémi Bachelet[http://rb.ec-lille.fr/ .

FEATURES

  • ''Graphical analysis (end of experiment)''

  • At the end of the experiment, graphical analysis can be done and saved.

  • Multiple financial products

  • Different financial products can be exchanged at the same time on the market (but only stocks for now).

  • ''Graphical "on-the-fly" analysis''

  • Each participant can view a chart summarizing the prices of the last deals executed. This chart is modified in real-time.

  • ''Pass "limit orders"''

  • This is done in a modular way so that new order types can be added very easily.

  • ''Pass "market orders"''

  • Another type of order is to be added in the software in order to better simulate the market.

  • ''Configurable stocks''

  • Multiple stocks can be exchanged on the market, and each one can be configured by setting the dividends given at the end of each session.

  • ''XML logging''

  • Every event happening on the market is logged, and can be analysed later.

  • ''Asymmetrical information''

  • The person in charge of the experiment will be able to give pieces of information to some participants only, in order to study the effects of asymmetrical information.

Missing features
