He was born in Brooklyn , New York . He graduated from Oberlin College , where he followed a Pre-med Curriculum . He applied unsuccessfully for medical-school Admission in two successive years. In 1978 Greenfield opened Ben and Jerry's Homemade ice cream scoop shop in Burlington, Vermont with his long-time friend, Ben Cohen .
