Jefferson is a city located in Marion County, Texas . As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,024. It is the County Seat of Marion County , and is situated in East Texas .


GEOGRAPHY


Jefferson is located at 32°45'40" North, 94°20'58" West (32.761013, -94.349331).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.4 Km&2 (4.4 Mi&2 ). 11.3 km&2 (4.3 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 2,024 people, 871 households, and 544 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 179.6/km&2 (465.7/mi&2). There were 1,042 housing units at an average density of 92.5/km&2 (239.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 62.80% White , 34.68% African American , 0.40% Native American , 0.84% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 0.54% from Other Races , and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 871 households out of which 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% were Married Couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $17,034, and the median income for a family was $26,250. Males had a median income of $28,929 versus $14,583 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $15,558. 32.9% of the population and 29.4% of families were below the Poverty Line . 54.1% of those under the age of 18 and 22.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


NEWSPAPER

The town newspaper is the Jefferson Jimplecute , which was founded in 1848 and is the fifth oldest newspaper in Texas.
