Jean Carondelet was appointed dean of the University Of Franche-Comté at Besançon in 1493 . Prince Charles's mother, Juana Of Castile was insane, and his aunt Margaret Of Austria , the Regent of the Spanish Netherlands , was his guardian. Prince Charles became acquainted with Jean Carondolet through his brother (Ferry Carondelet) who was the confessor to Margaret of Austria. Jean Carondelet soon became a close advisor to Prince Charles, and in 1517-1519, after Charles had assumed the Spanish throne, Jean Carondelet accompanied him to Spain as a member of his privy council. Later Jean Carondelet became the archbishop of Palermo , although he never resided there. He followed his brother as the abbot at Montbenoît . He died Feb. 7, 1544 at the family home in Malines .
