Jaron Lanier (born 1960 in New York City, but raised in Mesilla , New Mexico) is an artist, musician, inventor, Virtual Reality developer, film director, public speaker, and member of the Global Business Network . Lanier is probably best known for coining the term "Virtual Reality" in the early 1980's. At that time, he founded VPL Research, the first company to sell VR products. He is an extremely optimistic technologist who objects to Monism and believes in Free Will , a rare opinion in certain Artificial Intelligence , Neuroscience , and Evolution ary circles which he is a part of, but disagrees with. Jaron was friends with Timothy Leary , and often looks at technology and media from the perspective of Marshall McLuhan . Lanier taught at several Computer Science departments of universities around the country, including Columbia , Dartmouth , and Yale . He recently was the lead scientist for the National Tele-Immersion Initiative, an effort devoted to utilizing computer technology to give people (who are separated by great distances) the illusion that they are physically together. However, Lanier holds no academic degrees. PHILOSOPHICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL IDEAS In addition to his thoughts on virtual reality and telemersion, Jaron has been a critic of some aspects of Artificial Intelligence as well as some aspects of Extropianism attitudes. Some of Lanier's most interesting speculation involves what he dubbed ' in his predictions of global communications network allowing direct brain-brain interfacing throughout the planet's population.
