A Japanophile is a person with a strong interest in one or more aspects of Japan or Japanese Culture , or a non-Japanese with an adopted sense of love for Japan or Japanese culture. (as the etymology of the word suggests). The word is often used in a derogatory manner to denote a person with an excessive interest or fetish with Japan. "Japanophile" is also less commonly used to alternatively describe individuals who fall into one or more of the following categories:
Notable Japanophiles have included Lafcadio Hearn , Steven Seagal and Jacques Chirac . Some Japanophiles have been criticised for having a limited perception of Japanese culture, and many of their likes of Japan are based on Western perceptions. Anime and Japanese video game fans are often criticised for this. Another peril of japanophilia is the tendency to have a biased view through an adopted, Japanese cultural filter; e.g. equating mastery of all forms of swordsmanship with formal rank and recognition in Kendo (a Japanese Sport ).
