Japan sent 113 athletes to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics , held in Turin , Italy . Shizuka Arakawa won the country's only medal, a gold, in women's Figure Skating . She became the first Asian to become an Olympic champion in the event. MEDALS Gold Figure skating, women's individual Shizuka Arakawa . Shizuka Arakawa was the oldest female figure skater to win the gold in 86 years.
