is a fictional character in the
Stargate SG-1 TV series, played by
Teryl Rothery . She is an officer in the
United States Air Force and is the Chief Medical Officer of the
SGC under
General Hammond . She was particularly close friends with
Samantha Carter . Over the years she has provided comic relief and has served as a sort of maternal figure for SG-1.
Prior to joining Stargate Command, Dr. Janet Fraiser served as chief of the Aeromedical Services at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Her medical education includes a B.A. ''magna cum laude'' in chemistry and biology and a M.D. at Case Western Reserve Universtiy in Cleveland, Ohio.
She is an exceptionally skilled, caring, and dedicated doctor who saved many lives. She proves her brilliance on multiple occasions, solving many medical mysteries. She defends her medical principles as strongly as her patients, sometimes in contradiction to near-term mission goals.
Janet appears to have been married before she came to the SGC but it ended badly. She told Carter that her husband "Took the term, 'this man's army' a bit literally."
As the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Fraiser is responsible for maintaining the health of the SG teams (in many cases seemingly single handed), as well as the SGC's support staff and base personnel. On many occasions Fraiser has also been responsible for the health of alien refugees to Earth, including Goa'uld symbiotes. She takes the lead role in identifying infectious diseases, which are a constant threat when exploring new worlds.
Over her years with the SGC, Janet became the foremost expert on
Goa'uld symbiotes. She pioneered numerous technological advancements, and became an expert at regulating and administering
Tretonin .
Janet Fraiser first appeared in the season one episode "
The Broca Divide ", in which she endeavors to find a cure to an alien disease that turns humans into mindless beings.
Fraiser also adopts Cassandra, an alien orphan, in the episode "
Singularity ".
Major Janet Fraiser was killed in action while attempting to help an injured airman on P3X-666. Her loss greatly affected all SGC personnel, and was noted to the very top of the
U.S. Administration as a tragic loss.

In the January 2006 episode ''Ripple Effect'', an
Alternate Reality version of Dr. Fraiser appears when several SG-1 teams from alternate realities are pulled together. In an emotional moment, Carter, Jackson and Teal'c are able to say goodbye to her as they couldn't do before her death.
- ''Janet Fraiser was an extraordinary person. She was kind and funny and talented. Above all, she was courageous. Try as I might I could not find the words to honor her, to do justice to her life. Thankfully I got some help. While words alone may not be enough, there are some names that might do. We often talk about those that give their lives in the service of their country, and while Janet Fraiser did just that, that's not what her life was about. The following are the names of the men and women who did not die in service, but who are in fact alive today because of Janet.'' — Samantha Carter speaking at Janet Fraiser's memorial.
