Janamejaya, was the son of Arjuna's ( Mahabharata )grandson Parikishit. After the great war, Arjun nd his brothers ruled for some years and then later went for heaven. Arjun's son Abhimanyu and all other sons of the five pandavas were slain in the battle. Parikhshit was the only descendent left of the mighty pandavas. So he rules after them and dies bitten by a snake. Parikhshit's furious son, Janamejaya, decides to perform a sacrifice in which to kill all the snakes. It is at this sacrifice that the tale of his ancestors is narrated to him. (Incidentally, the sacrifice has to be stopped after sometime and the snakes are not annihilated.)Some texts quote this discourse being given by Vaishapayaana, where as some quote Jaimini to have given this lecture. But all texts are consistent with Janamejaya being on the receiving end. |
