Buchan was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford , and began his career as a Financial Times correspondent, writing from the Middle East, Germany, and the United States. His first novel, ''A Parish of Rich Women'', received the 1984 Whitbread Book of the Year award. Other novels include ''Heart's Journey in Winter'' and ''A Good Place to Die'' (published as ''The Persian Bride'' in the United States). He also writes non-fiction, including ''Capital of the Mind: Edinburgh 1745-89'' (US title: ''Crowded with Genius: Edinburgh's Moment of the Mind''). He is the grandson of John Buchan , the Scottish novelist and diplomat. |
