Jt (visualization Format)

JT files are used in software programs such as Teamcenter Visualization (Base, Standard, Professional and Mockup) by engineers and other professionals that need to analyze the geometry of complex products. The format and associated software is structured so that a large number of components can be quickly loaded, shaded and manipulated in real-time. For example a whole car, aircraft or ship can be displayed and in real time sectioned (wireframe and shaded). The software is also used for Digital Mockup (DMU) work, for example to check if all component can be assembled together and no collisions between parts exist. It is also used as a CAD neutral format for exchanging design data for Collaborative Product Development , where JT files are created by translating data from CAD systems such as NX (Unigraphics) , Catia or Autodesk Inventor .
The technology can handle large Assemblies (tens of thousands of components) because the JT file format stores geometry in different levels of detail. Each component in a product is stored in a separate file (as apposed to one very large single file) and in each file there are three or four representations of the component. There are three facet representations of the component and can also be an exact representation of the geometry. When the whole product is displayed on the computer screen only a simple, coarse, model is displayed, as the view is zoomed into a particular area finer detailed facet displays of individual components are loaded and displayed. Therefore only the level of detail required is loaded and used. If exact measurements are needed or geometry is required for CAD work exact geometry can also be loaded (if supplied).

The technology was originally developed from Engineering Animation, Inc. 's DirectModel format and is now part of UGS Corp. ’s range of products. It is also licensed to other companies for use in their own products.
Recently, an international collection of manufacturing companies and their software suppliers formed a group around the JT format called JT Open. Their goal is to establish the JT format as a standard data exchange format. Some consider it a defacto standard in this regard already as it has been in general use for this purpose for some time. JT Open seeks to further this notion and provide guidance for the continued development of the format
