(abbreviated '''I-88''') is an
Interstate Highway entirely within the
U.S. State of
New York . Its western end is at an intersection with
Interstate 81 in
Binghamton, New York ; its eastern end is at an intersection with
Interstate 90 in
Schenectady, New York .
Originally, in the 70's, plans for this highway called for a longer road than what exists today, stretching into
New England almost to the
Atlantic Coast .
I-88 was suppossed to go past the New York State Thruway, through the Albany Metropolitan area(the Crosstown Arterial section of NY 7 in Schenectady, and "Alt" Route 7, were to be part of the extension), up to
Bennington, Vermont (the
U.S. 7 interchange and Bennington Bypass are remnants of the extension plans. Only recently has the Bennington Bypass been built on the original highway grading.), through to
Manchester, New Hampshire (
I-293 and NH 101 are part of the original plans), and eventually end at
I-95 south of
Portsmouth .
Bolded cities are officially-designated
Control Cities for signs.
