Infosys Technologies Limited () is a global Information Technology (IT) services, solutions and consulting major started in Pune in 1981 and is curretly headquartered in Bangalore , Karnataka . In India, its development centers are located at Pune , Hyderabad , Chennai , Bhubaneshwar , Mangalore , Mysore , Mohali and Thiruvananthapuram .

With nearly 52,715 employees as on March 31 2006 and revenues of over US $2.15 billion, Infosys is one of India's largest IT Companies.

Infosys was founded in 1981 by 7 software professionals. In 1999 , Infosys attained SEI-CMM Level 5 . It was the first Indian company to get listed in NASDAQ in the same year. In 2001 and again in 2002 , it was rated "Best Employer in India" and "India's Most Respected Company" by the business periodicals Business Today and Business World respectively.

Currently, Infosys employs approximately 52,000 software professionals in about 30 offices worldwide As Of 2006 , working on varied areas mainly in consulting, software and product development. The headquarters are located at Electronics City , Bangalore , one of the largest IT campuses in the world.

Infosys crossed US $ 2 billion in revenues for the fiscal year ending March 2006.


HISTORY

Infosys was started in 1981, in the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra , India . A team of seven experienced software professionals, led by N. R. Narayana Murthy promoted the company. They brought into the company their wide experience, having handled projects in developed countries like United States , Europe and Canada . MICO was their first client.

Their initial foray into the US market was through a company called Data Basics Corp. as a “body-shop” or on-site developer of software for US customers. Later, in 1987, Infosys formed a joint venture with Kurt Salmon
Associates to handle marketing in the US.

More than 15,000 software professionals work at the Electronics City campus in Bangalore.It is usual for foreign dignitaries visiting Bangalore to make a visit to the campus.

A major campus, still under development, most important for its large eductional centre with the ability to train and host up ot 4000 students (course are held for induction of new employees as well as employees of all levels up to top management) at any given time is right outside Mysore .

The second phase of the Pune development center covers an area of 110 acres (450,000 m²) and, once fully built up, will have a total capacity of 25,000 professionals.

WHARTON INFOSYS BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION AWARD

Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award is a technology award started by The Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania and Infosys in 2002. This award recognizes enterprises and individuals who have transformed their businesses and the society leveraging information technology. Some of the past winners have been Samsung, Amazon.com, RBS and ING Direct.

Any company or individual can apply directly or nominate others. The winners are decided by an independent jury comprising some of the best known thought leaders in IT.

WIBTA is one of the only global business awards combining the education and research strengths of a world class academic institution with the business acumen of a world leader in information technology services.


INSTEP


InStep is Infosys' internship program offered to university students who are from many parts of the world.
The bulk of the interns work in the main campus at Electronics City, Bangalore, though a few are available globally.
The interns are offered a stipend, free airfare, accommodation, food, and city transportation.
Although they officially mention deadlines for applications, they recruit all year round.
Each intern is usually assigned to one mentor.
They are able to work in many areas of the company including Corporate Planning with top management.
The premise of the internship is to promote the corporate brand globally while interns gain business or technical work experience.


INFOSYS FOUNDATION

In , operating in the areas of Health Care , social rehabilitation and rural upliftment, education, arts and culture. Since then, this Foundation has spread to the Indian states of Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh , Maharashtra , Orissa and Punjab . The Infosys Foundation is headed by Mrs. Sudha Murthy, wife of Chairman Narayana Murthy.


INFOSYS ACQUISITIONS

In 2003 - 04 Infosys has acquired 100% equity of Expert Information Services Pty Limited, Australia (Expert).

Recently Infosys acquired the 23% stake Citibank had in its BPO offshoot Progeon, making it totally under its organisation enabling Infosys/Progeon to now look at other BPO deals in the banking sector apart from Citibank.
