Information About

Index (publishing)

The indexing process includes the selection of terms to be indexed, qualifying these with subentries where appropriate, and editing to improve cohesiveness, consistency, accuracy, and usefulness.

In Book s, indices are usually placed near the end. They complement the Table Of Contents by enabling access to information by subject, whereas contents listings enable access through broad categories arranged in the order they occur.

Indexing is usually done by freelancers hired by publishers or book packagers.

Indexing skills are also applied to periodicals, databases, and ebooks, and Web Indexing is now a major industry.
