Information About

Immigrant Song

"Immigrant Song" is the opening track on Led Zeppelin's third Album , '' Led Zeppelin III ''. It starts off with a driving Beat which fits the Theme of the song, Vikings exploring and pillaging new lands. A better appreciation of the heavy sound of this song can be heard on the album '' How The West Was Won '', recorded live in Los Angeles in 1972 . It was also on the soundtrack to the 2003 movie '' School Of Rock ''.

The American Grunge band Nirvana played a Cover Version of this song in their early performances, and a version is heard and seen on the DVD disc of the retrospective '' With The Lights Out '' Box Set .

The Power Metal group Demons And Wizards also included a cover of the song as a bonus track on their 2005 release '' Touched By The Crimson King ''.

Because of the song's theme, it has occasionally been referred to as " Hagar The Horrible's Theme Song".

"NEW LANDS"

The new lands referred to in the lyrics may refer to Europe , the coasts of England and France or, more likely, the ancient Americas .

When the song mentions "the land of the ice and snow", it is talking about Iceland . Furthermore when the song speaks of "hot springs" it also refers to Iceland, where hot springs and midnight sun are common.

The line "Hammer of the Gods" is speaking of Mjöllnir , the famous hammer of Thor , the Norse god of thunder and brutal war, hence the plunder and pillage theme. Mjöllnir was used to subdue Jotuns (giants) and the unholy ones. The ancient people of Europe would indeed think that Mjöllnir was used against them as they were conquered both by war and by payment of Danegeld . Danegeld was the name for the payoff of any village, town, or castle to keep the Vikings from destroying said places. Danegeld was not a set amount but was rather an agreed amount arranged by negotiation. Both conquest and payment of Danegeld were acknowledgements that the Vikings were indeed the overlords of the lands they settled in, thus the line "We are your overlords".

The line "Valhalla I am coming" is also another reference to Norse mythology, as Valhalla is Odin 's hall, a home for select warriors slain gloriously in battle. Valhalla is comparable to the Heaven of Christian belief.

The Vikings did cover many lands with gore as they pillaged and looted. The early preferred targets of Viking raids were Christian monastaries, convents and churches as there was much gold and wealth to be found there.

"Peace and trust will win the day despite of all your losing" did literally come to pass. Over time the genes of the Vikings became so mingled with the residents of the lands conquered both by arranged marriages and rapine that peace and trust won out despite the losing to the Vikings.
