Ile aux Galets, also known as ''Skilligallee'' or ''Skilligalee Island'', is located in northeast Lake Michigan approximately 7.0 miles (11.3 km) northwest of Cross Village, Michigan . It has been the site of a Lighthouse operated by the U.S. Government since 1850. The current 58-foot (17.5-m) light tower was built in 1888 and equipped with a fourth order Fresnel Lens . The islet and lighthouse were occupied by Lightkeeper s from 1850 until 1969. In the latter year the Fresnel lens was retired and replaced by a modern automated lantern. The islet is home to a significant colony of Ring-billed Gulls . Its name, given by early French explorers, means "Isle of Pebble s." EXTERNAL LINKS |
