Information About

Ivao

IVAO creates an on-line virtual world of pilots and controllers, allowing you to play the role of either pilot or air traffic controller.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

IVAO provides various ATC Servers and Voice-over-IP servers for pilots and controllers to connect to. Servers are distributed around the globe.

The ATC Servers allows pilots and controllers to ''see'' one another and communicate with one another using text. The Voice-over-IP servers allows voice communication to be used.

The software products and systems used (with the exception of the flight simulator software used by the pilot), are developed by the IVAO Development Division. This software is available at no costs for use on the IVAO Network.

The website can be found at http://www.ivao.aero/

MEMBERS

IVAO consists of about 60,000 members as of March 12 , 2006 .

IVAO membership covers most parts of the world, ranging from the West to the Far East and on both sides of the globe. It is most popular in Europe though. Local IVAO structures (called divisions) exist in various parts of the world. These divisions are staffed by local members filling IVAO management, support, maintenance and training posts for that local region. Local region structures report to the IVAO HQ Division.

Local regions offer their members various services. These services ranging from air traffic control, to special events, air races, special operations and training.

Special emphasis is placed on training of both Virtual Pilots and Virtual Air Traffic Controllers. Trainers and examiners in local IVAO training division often hold real-world pilot and controller qualifications. Emphasis is placed on simulating the real world of air traffic control as closely as possible, but in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

IVAOs primary competitor for pilots and controllers is VATSIM . VATSIM is considered to be the American-dominated online flight simulator network while IVAO is considered the European-dominated one. IVAO has recently (late 2005) been in the throws of an ownership argument, which ultimately led to the president being removed and the rest of the management team assuming ownership. In addition a number of members left IVAO for VATSIM, to the extent that VATSIM had to change their staff policies to cope with the influx. The original IVAO website is still viewable at where the former president continues to protest he has ownership; following the management takeover the website changed address to [http://www.ivao.aero/ .

SOFTWARE

IVAO software is developed by a dedicated software development team. The goal of IVAO software development is to ensure the future of on-line simulation on the IVAO network. IVAO also supports 3rd party developers who deliver software compatible with IVAO.

Furthermore the ATC client IvAc (for air traffic controllers) runs on all windows versions.
