Hwangnyongsa
|
is a former
Buddhist Temple in
South Korea . Its name means "golden dragon temple." It was built in the
Silla period, under the patronage of the Silla royal family. Construction began in
553 under the reign of
King Jinheung , and was not fully completed until
644 .
Following the defeat of
Baekje in the
660s , a Baekje architect was commissioned to build a nine-story wooden
Pagoda on the site. This stood until it was burned by
Mongol forces in
1238 .
The site of Hwangnyongsa, which has been excavated, lies in
Gyeongju National Park , in a valley near
Toham Mountain .
