Hurricane Hilda was the third Hurricane to make landfall in the United States during the 1964 Atlantic Hurricane Season .

STORM HISTORY

A slow moving easterly wave organized enough to become a tropical depression on September 28 south of Cuba. The depression was quite weak, but it steadily strengthened throughout the day, becoming a tropical storm on the 29th near the western tip of Cuba . On the 30th, Hilda strengthened to hurricane intensity, which was followed by a period of rapid intensification. Lasting until October 1 , Hilda became a 150 mph Category 4 hurricane while south of Louisiana .

As it approached the coastline, conditions became unfavorable, weakening Hilda to a 110 mph Category 2 hurricane at the time of its St. Mary Parish, Louisiana landfall on October 4 . When Hilda reached Baton Rouge, Louisiana , cool air became entrained in the eyewall, ridding Hilda of her tropical characteristics. The extratropical storm moved eastward, dissipating in Georgia .

IMPACT

Almost a complete evacuation of the entire Louisiana coast accounted for the low death toll of 38, most of which were caused by Tornado es spawned by the storm as it approached the coast. One twister at Larose, Louisiana , killed 22 and injured 200 people. Three other tornadoes caused much damage in the New Orleans metropolitan area but no deaths. The tornado damage, in combination with the crop damage from rainfall, caused a total of $126,000,000 in damage (1964 dollars).
