Hurricane is so named for its year-round gale-force winds that were first encountered by Mormon settlers in the early 20th century, although locals pronounce the name of the city "hûr'-ǐ-kŭn". This pronunciation, however, is under fire by people moving into the area who do not wish the community to continue to be plagued with the stigma of its residents being "rubes" and "hicks".
