The club played its home games at Topper Stadium (also known as Breakers Stadium) to only moderate attendances, the highlight of which was a defeat of eventual premier, the Brisbane Broncos - one of 7 wins from 18 matches.

More successful was the World Club Challenge campaign, where the Broncos turned the tables and defeated the Mariners 36-12 in the final.

The Mariners, along with the Western Reds were disbanded with formation of the National Rugby League .
