Holt is noted for the abundance of Georgian buildings, many of its medieval buildings having been destroyed in a fire in 1708 . The Norman parish church is dedicated to St Andrew . Holt is known for Gresham's School , an independent school founded in 1555 , whose Alumni include Benjamin Britten , Auden , Sir John Reith , Sir Alan Hodgkin , Sir Christopher Cockerell , Lennox Berkeley , Stephen Spender , and James Dyson . One mile to the east of the town centre is a Terminus for the North Norfolk Railway , the other being Sheringham .
