HISTORY

Hollis was incorporated by colonial governor Benning Wentworth in 1746. The name comes from a Wentworth ancestor, John Holles, Earl Of Clare .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 83.7 Km&2 (32.3 Mi&2 ). 82.2 km&2 (31.8 mi&2) of it is land and 1.5 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.76% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 7,015 people, 2,440 households, and 2,025 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 85.3/km&2 (221.0/mi&2). There were 2,491 housing units at an average density of 30.3/km&2 (78.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.59% White , 0.44% African American , 0.11% Native American , 1.65% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.17% from Other Races , and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,440 households out of which 42.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.9% were Married Couples living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.0% were non-families. 13.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $92,847, and the median income for a family was $104,737. Males had a median income of $76,025 versus $46,161 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $44,936. 2.6% of the population and 2.8% of families were below the Poverty Line . 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


TRIVIA

Hollis's principal (and for a long time, only) Traffic Light is located at the center of town at the intersection of NH Route 130 and NH Route 122 . Now, two additional traffic lights have been added on NH Route 111 on the southern edge of the town.
