Hollinger Inc. is controlled by Canadian-based Ravelston Corporation , which was set up as a personal holding company for Canadian-born businessman Conrad Black who gave up his Canadian citizenship to become Lord Black of Crossharbour in Britain's House of Lords. On April 20 , 2005 , Conrad Black and business partner David Radler resigned from Ravelston to facilitate a filing for bankruptcy protection. Ravelston is now in the hands of court-appointed receiver RSM Richter.

The company began as Hollinger Gold Mines in 1909 and later became Hollinger Mines , owner of one of the world's largest gold mines near Timmins, Ontario. It was acquired by E.P. Taylor's conglomerate, Argus Corp.
