Hogsmeade is a fictional settlement in Scotland that appears in the '' Harry Potter '' novels. Hogsmeade is the only pure wizarding settlement in the United Kingdom and is located south of Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry . Third year students and older are permitted to visit the Village , as long as they have a signed permission slip from their parent or guardian.

Hogsmeade remained unseen in the films, except for the short sequences where the train arrives at the Hogsmeade station and at the end when Harry leaves from the station in The First Movie , until the release of '' Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban '' in 2004 .

A Map of Hogsmeade can be found at the Harry Potter Lexicon site.

The Three Broomsticks

''The Three Broomsticks'' is one of the local pubs in Hogsmeade. It is well known for its delicious "butterbeers" and the beautiful owner Madam Rosmerta . She lives above the first floor. Ron has a crush on Madam Rosmerta, but denies it. The Three Broomsticks is a favorite pub among Hogwarts students, who can usually be found in it relaxing after the stress of school or tests.

Zonko's Joke Shop

Zonko's has jokes and tricks that could "fulfill even Fred And George 's wildest dreams." It was closed in '' Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince ''; possible reasons include Voldemort 's rise to power or competition from Fred and George's new shop in London. The twins planned to buy the shop before Hogwarts' students were banned from visiting Hogsmeade. Zonko's closed when it began losing business (the students were the main customers).

The Hogsmeade Station

Station]] of '' Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone

This is where the Hogwarts Express arrives after travelling from King's Cross . Scenes involving Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter films were shot at the station on the North York Moors Railway , built in 1865 and virtually unchanged, that serves the village of Goathland in the North Yorkshire Moors .

The Hog's Head

The Hog's Head is another Pub , which attracts more unusual customers than the Three Broomsticks. The hanging sign in front of the pub has a severed boar's head leaking blood onto the white cloth around it. The pub itself is filthy, with the floor covered under layers and layers of dirt, the windows are smeared with so much grime that they hardly let any light through. The ground floor is a single room, but there are rooms on the upper floors. A Hogwarts Headmaster interviewed a potential professor here (because the professor had chosen the lodgings for their cheapness). Harry notes that the dirty room smells strongly of goats, and that it's something of a fashion to hide your face or head at this pub. While students are permitted to go to the pub, they are strongly advised to bring their own glasses. The bartender is an elderly man, and is in fact Albus Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth.

Despite it's somewhat seedy reputation, the Hog's Head has been witness several important events throughout the series. It was here that the seer Sibyll Trelawney revealed the prophecy connecting Voldemort and Harry , during an interview with Albus Dumbledore for the position of Divination teacher. This was also where Hagrid bought an illegal dragon egg from Voldemort's servant in disguise. A few years later, the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army was held here, where it was eavesdropped upon by a Ministry spy. Centuries before this, this inn was the headquarters of the 1612 Goblin Rebellion.

Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop

Scrivenshaft's is a stationary shop located on the High Street.

Gladrags Wizardwear

Gladrags Wizardwear sells clothes. There are other branches in London and Paris . It is full of quirky merchandise, and appears to specialize in strange and unusual socks.

Madam Puddifoot's

Located on a little side street off the main High Street, this cramped little tea shop is patronized by Hogwarts couples out on dates. The decor is on the tacky side of frilly - Madam Puddifoot goes overboard with this on Valentine's Day, when she hires floating golden cherubs to throw pink confetti on trysting couples.

Honeydukes Sweetshop

Honeydukes is one of the most famous wizarding sweetshops in the world. It sells wizard candies and treats of all descriptions, including Chocolate Frogs, Licorice Wands, and Cockroach Clusters. Honeydukes is particularly well known for their special kind of fudge. They also sell creamy chunks of nougat, pink squares of coconut ice, honey-colored toffees, and row upon row of different kinds of chocolate.

Honeydukes sweets are sold to students on the Hogwarts Express tea trolley on the journeys to and from Scotland and London.

The owners, Ambrosius Flume and his wife, live in an apartment above the shop. There is a Secret Passage connecting the basement of the shop and the statue of a humpbacked witch on the third floor of Hogwarts , which Harry Potter uses to illegally enter Hogsmeade in the Prisoner Of Azkaban .

The Shrieking Shack

Main article located at Shrieking Shack .

This house is supposed to be the most severely haunted building in Britain . The Hogwarts Ghost s avoid this place. Fred And George Weasley tried to get in, of course, but failed. When James Potter and his friends were in school, Remus Lupin used this house during his monthly transformations to stay isolated from the students, being brought there every month by Madam Pomfrey .
