GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2,353 Km&2 (909 Mi&2 ). 2,352 km&2 (908 mi&2) of it is land and 1 km&2 (0 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water. Adjacent counties
DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 22,716 people, 7,994 households, and 6,091 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 10/km&2 (25/mi&2). There were 9,148 housing units at an average density of 4/km&2 (10/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 74.38% White , 3.72% Black or African American , 0.82% Native American , 0.13% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 18.68% from Other Races , and 2.22% from two or more races. 37.24% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 7,994 households out of which 38.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% were Married Couples living together, 11.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.80% were non-families. 21.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.22. In the county, the population was spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 11.80% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.20 males. The median income for a household in the county was $31,085, and the median income for a family was $35,288. Males had a median income of $29,735 versus $20,671 for females.
