Hochelega (village)

It is still not firmly known which tribe founded Hochelaga. Both the Huron and the Mohawk traditions claim Hochelaga as their own, but another Iroquois tribe is also not excluded (the term Laurentian Iroquois, attributed to the people living in the St-Lawrence valley which encompasses Hochelaga, is a generic expression used to avoid to settle on the issue). Linguistic evidence tends to support the Hurons, but the fortifications of the village were of the Iroquois style as found in the Mohawk villages. It is generally believed that the village was abandoned for safety, as this epoch would be one of wartime between Iroquois, Hurons, and Algonquins, but one cannot underestimate the impact of diseases brought by the first encounters with the Europeans.

Hochelaga-Maisonneuve today refers to a neighbourhood in the East End of Montreal . It is one of the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. The neighbourhood is a likely candidate as the setting of the popular Quebec television series Les Bougon .
