Hikaru Sulu is a ''. Her origin was depicted in the novel ''The Captain's Daughter'' by Peter David . His ultimate fate has not been documented. It's widely assumed that he retained command of the '' episode " Flashback ". In the TV series, movies, and novels, Sulu is shown to have many interests and hobbies, including fencing, botany, collecting ancient weapons, martial arts, and piloting craft of various eras. As with many of the minor characters, he is somewhat of an enigma — his first name was not even established into ''Trek'' '' #1614; March 2006 ; Page 10.) The character is meant to be of pan-Asian decent, but was raised in San Francisco . ''Hikaru'' is a Japan ese name, while '' Sulu '' is taken from a province in the Philippines .
