Hexham is located on the bank of the Hunter River about 15 kilometres inland from the city of Newcastle .

Hexham is also located at the juntion of the Pacific Highway to Brisbane via the coastal route, the New England Highway and the F1 Freeway to Sydney .

Settlement occurred at Hexham in the 1820s and it was named after Hexham , England , both towns being near to a Newcastle.

Hexham is heavily involved with coal mining, and was the riverine terminus of an early coal hauling railway from Minmi and Stockrington.
