Hersey R. Hawkins, Jr. (born September 29 , 1966 in Chicago, Illinois ) is a former professional Basketball player. After starring at Westinghouse High School in Chicago, the 6’ 3” Shooting Guard attended Bradley University , where he averaged an NCAA Division I-high 36.3 points per game in 1988 . He was then drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the 1988 NBA Draft , but his rights were immediately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for the draft rights to Charles Smith . Hawkins earned NBA All-Rookie First Team Honors in 1989 , and in 1991 he averaged 22.1 points and appeared in the NBA All-Star Game . In 1993 , Hawkins was traded to the Charlotte Hornets for Dana Barros , Sidney Green and draft picks, and after productive two seasons in Charlotte , he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics for Kendall Gill . In 1996 , he played a key role on a Sonics team that made it to the NBA Championship before succumbing to the Chicago Bulls . He later joined the Bulls in 1999 , but his one-year tenure in Chicago was marred by injury, and he only averaged 7.9 points per game. He returned to Charlotte in 2000 for his final season, and he retired in 2001 with 14,470 career points and a ranking of 15th all-time in career NBA Three-point Field Goals Made .
