Hawley is a borough located in Wayne County, Pennsylvania . As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 1,303. The borough was named for Irad Hawley, first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company. GEOGRAPHY Hawley is located at 41°28'42" North, 75°10'45" West (41.478225, -75.179154). The school Wallenpaupack Area School District is located in Hawley, as is nearby Lake Wallenpaupack . According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 1.7 Km&2 (0.6 Mi&2 ). 1.6 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.04 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.12% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,303 people, 593 households, and 335 families residing in the borough. The Population Density was 824.7/km&2 (2,132.2/mi&2). There were 673 housing units at an average density of 426.0/km&2 (1,101.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.24% White , 0.92% African American , 0.15% Native American , 0.38% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.31% from Other Races , and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.61% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 593 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% were Married Couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.5% were non-families. 40.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.96. In the borough the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 82.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $22,404, and the median income for a family was $33,462. Males had a median income of $25,357 versus $20,357 for females.
