Information About

Hart Trophy

The Hart Memorial Trophy is presented annually to the Ice Hockey player who is "judged to be the most valuable to his team" in the National Hockey League during the regular season. Voting is conducted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

Presentation of the trophy originated in 1923 when it was donated by Dr. David Hart to the National Hockey League. Dr. Hart was the father of Cecil Hart , a former coach and manager of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. When the original trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall Of Fame in 1960, the NHL began presenting the Hart Memorial Trophy in its place.

There has been occasional controversy throughout the years over Hart voting between those who feel the award should go to the league's best player and those who feel it should be awarded to the strict guideline set down with its donation.

Wayne Gretzky won the award a record nine times in the 1980s.
