Briegel made his international debut against Wales in 1979; his final game for his country came against Argentina in the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico City. In all, he won 72 caps for West Germany , scoring four goals.

He played for several clubs, including FC Kaiserslautern , Sampdoria and Hellas Verona , where he won a ''scudetto'' (the Serie A title) in 1984 - 1985 .

Now retired as a player, he is currently head coach of the Albanian National Team .
