In 2005 the 64 woman field was selected as follows:

  • The leading 60 players on the LPGA Tour money list as at June 20, 2005.

  • The 2005 U.S. Women's Open Champion.

  • The leading player on the LPGA Of Japan Tour money list as at June 13, 2005, not otherwise qualified.

  • Two sponsor's invitees.


In 2006 the field will be based mainly on the Women's World Golf Rankings . It was originally planned that this would be the case in 2005, but the inauguration of the rankings was delayed by a year.

The closest equivalent event in men's professional golf is the WGC-Accenture World Matchplay Championship , which is also a 64 player 18 hole matchplay event. However the impetus for the creation of the new tournament perhaps came more directly from HSBC's sponsorship of the HSBC World Match Play Championship , a longer established tournament played in the United Kingdom , but that is a sixteen player thirty-six hole event.
