is a
Fictional Character in the popular
BBC Soap Opera ''
EastEnders ''. He is played by
Mohammed George .
He first arrived in
Walford in
May 2002 , working as a trader for a bed company. It was here that he met
Sonia Jackson , they had a series of disagreements about a bed that her grandad
Jim had bought. Gus eventually fell in love with Sonia, who preferred
Jamie Mitchell and then
Martin Fowler . Since then Gus's love life appears to have been bleak, although he is known for his poetry.
After his employment with the bed company ended, Gus took on the role as the local street-sweeper. Gus was also given
Wellard the dog when his friend
Robbie Jackson left
London for
India .
Gus has encountered a number of problems during his time on
Albert Square . When friends
Martin and
Vicki Fowler broke into the Minute Mart, Gus investigated, was caught red handed by police and left to take the blame.
During a minibus crash in
Scotland , Gus managed to find help for his stranded friends.
He also had the problem of his brother
Juley 's involvement in crime. In
2004 Gus disposed of a handgun he found in his brother's bag.
In
2005 his brother, Juley, was still involved in crime, which led to his departure in April of this year. In September 2005, Gus,
Mickey ,
Minty ,
Garry and Juley went to
France , which led Gus to reflect on his life. Juley returned to Albert Square with his brother.
When Gus's dog Wellard bit
Ian Beale and Ian decided he wanted Wellard put down. Ian and Gus became sworn enemies of each other because of this.
When
Deano Wicks arrived in the Square in January 2006, he helped Gus with his campaign to release Wellard by designing a t-shirt, with the help of
Dawn Swann .
Wellard walked free on 12 January 2006 thanks to Ian's partner,
Jane Collins and children
Peter and
Lucy giving Wellard character witness statements.
