Gulliver Preparatory School is a premier, private Co-educational High School located in Miami, Florida , United States . It is part of Gulliver Schools, whose first campus was established in 1926 by Arthur Gulliver and whose newest campus was recently established by Marian Krutulis, the current director of Gulliver Schools, in 1994.

SCHOOL'S HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

Established in 1926 by Arthur Gulliver in Miami’s residential Coconut Grove section, Gulliver Academy initially enrolled students from New England who were wintering in South Florida. Many parents saw Gulliver as a twin school to prestigious eastern academies in terms of both curriculum and focus. Thus, it seemed a natural choice for academic and character education as well as a laboratory for exploring the region’s exciting natural environment.

Perhaps the most formative episode in Gulliver’s history was the purchasing of the school by Marian Krutulis late in 1952. A Miami pioneer in exploring the maze of problems faced by youngsters, both in terms of their learning styles and educational challenges, Mrs. Krutulis clearly saw the potential of the school and the site as a haven for youngsters. Ultimately thousands of children would thrive under her leadership and benefit from her decisive, charismatic style. She envisioned Gulliver as a grand school home where everyone, both students and teachers, would feel part of a caring, challenging family of learners. As a result, Mrs. Krutulis came to personify independent education in Florida and to represent the educational reality that care, strength, and candor can generate success and high self-esteem for children.

In 1967, Mrs. Krutulis moved the school to South Dade, an area that would soon undergo a major population explosion. Centered in Coral Gables, there are five campuses today, each serving a specific age group or targeting a particular student interest or need. Gulliver Academy serves students in pre-kindergarten through grade eight and is located in a residential area of Coral Gables five miles south of Miami. Gulliver South Miami Campus, located in an adjacent South Miami suburb, serves senior kindergarten through grade four. This campus commenced operation in 1994 and added the dimension of a gymnastic program for youngsters. Gulliver Preparatory School, opened in 1975, serves students in grade nine through grade twelve and is located nearby in what came to be known as the Village of Pinecrest. Gulliver’s Pinecrest Campus opened in 1995 and initially served students in grade seven through grade twelve who required smaller classes and benefited from alternative teaching and learning styles. In September 2001, Gulliver Pinecrest Preparatory Campus became a school for grade nine through grade twelve and opened in its own facility. Pinecrest Middle School opened the same year as a facility for grade six through grade eight.

All five campuses are located within a three and a half-mile radius and are served by the city’s major public and private transportation systems, including Metrorail, Interstate-95, and the Palmetto Expressway. This enviable location enables the school to draw students from all sections of the Miami metropolitan area and enroll international youngsters whose parents are involved in the community’s rich economic and cultural life. The school works in tandem with its institutional neighbors, particularly the University of Miami, Florida International University, Barry University, and Miami Dade College.  Gulliver’s reputation, based on its unity of purpose and its quest for both personal and academic excellence, makes these relationships most supportive.

With an enrollment of more than two thousand students, Gulliver Schools offers the full spectrum of academic and extracurricular programs. Students are rostered in a sequence of classes designed to challenge them and enhance their skills. From the Primary School to the Preparatory School’s International Baccalaureate program, Gulliver’s classes are student-focused, academically rigorous, and tailored to meet individual needs. Middle and high school students whose skill-building processes require close attention spend the morning at either the Pinecrest Middle Campus or Pinecrest Preparatory Campus and are transported to the Academy or the Preparatory Campus for lunch, afternoon courses, and extracurricular activities.

Extracurricular activities are limited only by the bounds of student creativity. Both community service organizations and interest groups thrive on all campuses. Gulliver’s athletic program has achieved success at all levels of competition and has been named by The Miami Herald as the Best Small Athletic Program in the area.  In addition, Gulliver is recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education

During the 2003-2004 school year, Gulliver celebrated its 50th anniversary with Mrs. Krutulis at its helm.  Gulliver continues to focus on Marian Krutulis’ vision of maximizing students’ academic potential, maintaining their bodies’ health, and training them to become people of integrity in everything they say and do.

Gulliver Schools is committed to creating a dynamic learning environment which fosters and nurtures the uniqueness of each student. Recognizing the range of aptitudes, interests, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles of our student body, we assume the responsibility of providing an atmosphere which encourages all students to strive for academic excellence relative to their own potential.

The school's rival is Ransom Everglades which is located in Coconut Grove.
