The municipality's main city and the site of its municipal council is Gudme . Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Ørbæk to the north, Ryslinge to the northwest, Egebjerg to the west, and Svendborg to the south. Neighboring municipality to the east, Tranekær , is separated from Gudme by the Great Belt . The municipality was formed in 1970 from the following parishes;
By January 1 , 2007 Gudme municipality will cease to exist as the result of ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" Of 2007) . It will be merged with Svendborg and Egebjerg municipalities to form the new Svendborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 418 Km&2 and a total population of 58,354 (2005).
