Greenwich Township is a Township located in Cumberland County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 847.


HISTORY


The small community on the Cohansey Creek was the site on the Greenwich Tea Party during the run up to the American Revolutionary War in which a load of Tea meant to be sent overland into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was torched in the night. {Link without Title}


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 48.9 Km&2 (18.9 Mi&2 ). 47.0 km&2 (18.2 mi&2) of it is land and 1.9 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.81% water.

Greenwich Township borders Fairfield Township , Hopewell Township , Stow Creek Township , Salem County , and the Delaware Bay .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 847 people, 326 households, and 245 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 18.0/km&2 (46.6/mi&2). There were 361 housing units at an average density of 7.7/km&2 (19.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 89.96% White , 5.08% African American , 2.60% Native American , 0.24% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.12% from Other Races , and 2.01% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 326 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% were Married Couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the township the population was spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $52,188, and the median income for a family was $56,111. Males had a median income of $43,214 versus $30,208 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $22,233. 8.0% of the population and 6.1% of families were below the Poverty Line . 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Greenwich Township is in the Second Jerseyan Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District.






EDUCATION

The Morris Goodwin School serves approximately 100 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

For grades 9-12, students attend Cumberland Regional High School , which serves students from Deerfield Township , Fairfield Township , Greenwich Township , Hopewell Township , Shiloh Borough , Stow Creek Township and Upper Deerfield Township . The school is located in the Rosenhayn section of Deerfield Township and is part of the Cumberland Regional High School District .
