Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer

In the lyrics, the grandmother of the family gets drunk by drinking too much Eggnog with Alcohol added to it and forgets her meds as she walks home. In the course of her walk, she is, as the title suggets, run over by a reindeer, leading to her demise.

RELEASES

The song was originally self-released by the Shropshires, before being picked up by the tiny Oink! label and again by Soundwaves Records , all in 1979. By the early 1980s , the song had begun to catch on nationwide, first on Country Stations , then on Top 40 Stations, so it was re-recorded and released with a new B-side on Epic Records in 1984. (The 1984 Epic re-recording can be distinguished from the original 1979 version by the emphasis placed on the words ''"You can say..."'' in the chorus.)

Following the Shropshires' divorce, Elmo re-recorded it solo in 1992 and again in 2000 .

Chorus

  • ''"Grandma got run over by a Reindeer , walking home from our house Christmas eve. You can say there's no such thing as Santa , but as for me and Grandpa, we believe."''
