Information About

Grand Bowl

Played twice annually, the Grand Bowl is the championship game of the Independent Flag Football League (IFFL) of Raleigh, North Carolina . The game and its ancillary events comprise the league's '''Bowl Weekend'''.
, held on April 29, 2006.]]

HISTORY

The series began in 2002 with the Grand Bowl, in which the champions of the league's Liberty and Independence Divisions met on the field for the IFFL 's championship. Since then the game has been played after each season.

Grand Bowl X will be the IFFL's Fall 2006 championship game, and is tentatively scheduled to be held on Sunday, December 3 , 2006 at a location to be determined.

ORIGINS

The Grand Bowl was envisioned from the launch of the Independent Flag Football League as its championship game and signature event. League founder and Commissioner D.P. McIntire chose the name "Grand Bowl" after seeing "Grand" it as a synonym for "Super," and after
rejecting names like the "Salad Bowl," "Oak Bowl," "Acorn Bowl," "Cherry Bowl" and "AmeriBowl."

GRAND BOWL CUP

After the Harlequins won the first two Grand Bowls, McIntire donated a traveling championship trophy, officially known as the "Grand Bowl Cup" but often referred to as the "McIntire Cup," presenting it to the league's champions following each season. The trophy features a gold-plated bowl atop a wooden base, with the base containing plates featuring each game's result, the date it was played, and the names of the members of the winning team. The winning team takes possession of the cup until the start of the next season, when its returned to the league for engraving and preparation for presentation to the next recipient.

TRIVIA

  • The IFFL uses Roman Numerals to identify each game, not to mimic the Super Bowl but to identify individual seasons and reduce confusion. Playing two seasons (spring and fall) each year, a team calling itself the "2006 Grand Bowl champions" could be referring to either a spring or fall title.

  • The Steamrollers have appeared in the most Grand Bowls (6), including four consecutive from the Fall 2002 season (game II) through the Spring 2004 season (game V).

  • Grand Bowl III was delayed from its originally scheduled date of April 26 to May 9 , 2003 due to scheduling conflicts from both teams. It remains the only game in league history not to be played on a Saturday .

  • Four of the nine Grand Bowls played to date have been decided in the game's final 10 seconds.

  • Six of the nine Grand Bowls have been decided by six points or less.
