Information About

Gorleston

Gorleston-on-Sea is part of the town of Great Yarmouth , in the English county of Norfolk . It is situated on the west side of the River Yare which divides the town, with the centre of Great Yarmouth on the east, or seaward, side.

Gorleston was historically part of the old County Borough of Great Yarmouth, but that was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 . Since April 1 1974 it has formed part of the unparished urban area of Great Yarmouth, which is itself a portion of the larger current Borough Of Great Yarmouth .

Gorleston's main claim to historical fame is as the centre of the Herring fishing industry with sailing trawlers. It was a major seaside resort in Edwardian times and retains much of this Edwardian charm in the beach area. The beach is one of the very best and regularly achieves Blue Flag status.

A major health facility located in Gorleston is the James Paget Hospital that provides a service for the whole area.
