Randall "Memphis" Raines is gentle and wise, yet skillful in his job as a top ranked car thief in town. However he chose to walk away from the life, the city and his girlfriend at the peak of his career, without leaving a reason. Car theft in Long Beach went down 47% since then.
Kip Raines is the younger brother of Memphis. He respects his brother very well--and his brother's notority in the business. He dreams to become a car thief, as great as his brother. While Memphis is away, he arises and became the leader of a small, high profile car theft group. What he doesn't know, and is not aware of, is the reason of his brother's departure.
During a day's work as a children go-cart racing instructor an old "friend" approached him, telling him Kip got into trouble. Kip screwed up for stolen-car broker Raymond Calitri. Memphis talked to Calitri and tried to negotiate, and offered paying back the $10,000 Kip owed by messing up the job. But the cold Calitri wanted more--he wanted to use the retired master thief. Memphis was forced to accept the deal before Kip is killed in front of him. It was Monday, and Calitri demanded 50 exotic cars in a container ship by 8:00 AM Friday morning. Not even a master thief would do this kind of business in 4 days.
Having no choices Memphis had to start over. He re-gathered his old partners, who all retired into other careers and/or are killed. Seeing himself getting his brother into such trouble, Kip brought on his crew. Unfortunately Memphis' long time rival in Law noticed his return too, and tracked the whole gang trying to prevent the next big embarrassment on the Police.
With Memphis' supreme plans and skillful partners, 49 cars are waiting quietly at the ship even though the crew had some rather minor troubles. Memphis only had one more to go--the 1967
Shelby Mustang GT 500 . Code-named Eleanor, the car was described the one Memphis most admired--and afraid of. Extremely carefully Memphis started the car, but found police officers watching right behind. Memphis evaded the pursuit with terrific driving skills, but by the time Memphis stands before Calitri he was late, and Eleanor was quite disfigured. Calitri cruelly ordered Memphis to be killed and Eleanor to be shed, despite Memphis' effort of saving his brother, stealing the other 49 cars in one night and driving the car to him under a heavy police force.
Memphis was about to be executed. The pistol was pointed at his head. At the very last moment Kip and some friends are right on time saving his brother after Kip learning the reason Memphis retired was to prevent Kip taking the same, wrong path, which eventually failed. But then Calitri went after Memphis for a three-way chase with the police. Memphis hid, but his rival police officer was gun-pointed by Calitri, who would hesitate not about killing an unarmed lawman. Memphis jumped out, pushed Calitri down the platform they were on and saved the officer's life, despite the officer is after him.
The officer learned that this time Memphis is stealing for nothing but his brother's life. With his own life spared by Memphis he let him go. In return, Memphis told him the location of the container ship, "you may want to have a look."
The last scene was at Memphis' mentor's garage, the first one Memphis went to asking for help. The whole crew partied and greeted Memphis' reunion with his girlfriend. Kip brought his brother a gift to thank him--the severely damaged Shelby Mustang repaired by the whole crew. The excited Memphis couldn't help but start driving with his girlfriend, but the engine died as the screen faded out.
