HISTORY The Goldstone Ground once stood on Old Shoreham Road, opposite Hove Park . The surrounding locale is a residential area; a fact which hindered the development of the stadium, and made redevelopment an impossibility. Brighton and Hove Albion played its first game at The Goldstone in 1902 when it took the stadium over from the previous tenants; the Amateur Hove Football Club who had played at the ground since 1901 . Brighton and Hove Albion played at the stadium until 1997 when, after having admitted 22.9 million supporters to 2174 games, the stadium was sold off and the club moved out. The final game at The Goldstone was held on the April 26th 1997 in which Brighton beat Doncaster Rovers F.C. 1-0 in front of a packed stadium. The ground was sold by the then board in an attempt to raise funds for the then debt-ridden club, although no alternative had been lined up (despite the boards claims to supporters of an arranged ground share with Portsmouth F.C. , which was entirely fictional), and the club was forced to ground-share over 100km from Brighton at the Priestfield Stadium , home of Gillingham F.C. . The site which the stadium stood on was taken over by property developers, and today a retail park stands where the ground once was. REFERENCES |
