Information About

Golcar

Golcar is a relatively small village (population 17,000 in 2001) but has a long history. It was named after St Guthlac who preached in the area in the 8th Century . It appears in the Domesday Book as ''Goullakarres''.

In the Industrial Revolution , Golcar became an important centre for Weaving , and an old weaver's cottage has been turned into the Colne Valley Museum . The exhibits include a handloom and a Spinning Jenny , invented by James Hargreaves .
