GOAT ISLAND, AUCKLAND REGION Auckland 's Goat Island is a tiny island (approximately one hectare) located close to the North Island coast northeast of Warkworth , and directly west of Hauturu/Little Barrier Island . Its Maori name (and now legal name, to prevent confusion with other Goat Islands,) is Takangaroa, which means "The Long Casting of the Net". Nearby Rabbit Island is known as "The Short Casting of the Net", and two rocky reefs between them are considered to be the Buoy s of the net. During the late 19th century, it was owned by Sir George Grey , the then Governor-General Of New Zealand . The island is now privately owned, and is a Wildlife Sanctuary, meaning that no dogs, cats or guns are allowed. It forms part of a marine reserve that was officially formed in 1977 . GOAT ISLAND, OTAGO Goat Island in Otago , is located between Port Chalmers and Portobello , halfway down Otago Harbour . It is to the nortwest of the larger Saint Martin's/Quarantine Island . |
