Loghnane was born in County Clare in 1954 . He played his club hurling with his local Feakle Club, as well as with St Patrick’s teacher training college in Dublin . He made his senior county début for the Clare hurlers in 1972 and starred in the teams which won the GAA National Hurling League in 1977 and 1978 , having lost the 1976 final in a replay. He won three Railway Cup medals with Munster (1976, 1978 and 1981 ) and was the first Clareman to win an All-Star award, in 1974 , an honour he again achieved in 1977. Although a gifted hurler, Loghnane's greatest achievements have been as a manager, steering Clare to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship title of 1995 , the county’s first championship success since 1914 . The team repeated that success in 1997 and almost reached the final again in 1998 . An outspoken and often controversial figure, Loughnane’s achievements have given him cult status in his native county of Clare. He is a regular pundit on RTÉ 's Gaelic Games programme, '' The Sunday Game ''. |
